Not getting a good nights sleep? Use this simple design advice to create a perfect slumber.

A comfy mattress isn’t the only necessity for a good night’s sleep so use this design advice to create a homely haven leaving you with sweet dreams every night.

Whether you’re the type of person who requires a solid 8 hours or can happily get on with your day with limited shut eye, it cannot be denied that being in bed is great! A good night’s sleep does wonders for our mental and physical wellbeing and whilst a supportive and comfortable mattress is crucial, there are a number of other things that you can do to create the perfect sleeping environment.

Believe it or not but the design and colour of your bedroom can have a huge effect on your sleeping pattern. Bold and brash shades can have a negative impact – instead opt for cool, calming colours and accessorise with numerous soft furnishings including faux fur cushions and chunky knit throws. Muted, pastel colours work well as well as pale grey, which is currently huge in interior trends.

In a modern world where everyone is doing multiple things at once, bedrooms can often become an extension of living spaces. Avoid having a television or computer in the bedroom, and turn off your mobile phone and anything with an LED display at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Your bedroom should have a calming atmosphere without distractions so invest in a good book, light some sweet-smelling candles and why not sprinkle a potpourri with essential oils of lavender to make you feel relaxed and calm before sleeping.

If you’re a fan of Feng Shui, then the placement of furniture will also have an impact. Place sofas against solid walls to anchor them, rather than leaving them 'floating' in the middle of a room. You should also avoid blocking natural pathways in the room and use mirrors to enhance the flow of natural light and energy. Not only will this affect the energy in the room, but also positive energy means a better sleep.

Ensuring that your room is dark will aid you to a better sleep. Blackout blinds and curtains are a popular choice and you should also dim the lights an hour before to regulate your body. Of course, if you prefer having some light consider investing in a dimmer switch or a night-light will be better than bright lighting that is sometimes used in homes. In addition to this, creating an optimum temperature will also be beneficial. Everyone is different but once you find your desired temperature, stick to it!

It may be obvious but reducing any noises in your property will also help. Switch the TV off before sleep and consider investing in a sound conditioner or fan to create a soothing and consistent sound backdrop.

Finally, it is worth taking some time out to create a sleep-friendly bedroom as if the average night’s sleep is eight hours (also a third of the day), then you sleep for a third of one’s life. If you live say, 75 years, that's 25 years asleep, or 9,125 days.
